Get Rochdale Reading Week- 21st to 26th November

Hi everyone, we have a great week packed full of events put on by the Wheatsheaf library starting today. It's all thanks to the Maskew bequest and organised by Suzi Heslan.
Tonight kicks off the fantastic line up with, as you might imagine, a pub crawl! Meeting in the library at 4.45pm and meandering over to Bar 5 at 5pm, where Norm and Robin of Just Poets and Lancashire dialect specialist Sid Calderbank will be on hand to help you create your own dialect limerick. This will run till 6.30pm, and then we crawl over to The Baum at 7pm for the chance to perform your limerick. There will be readings of original dialect poetry from The Edwin Waugh Society with the accompaniment of folk musician Mark Dowding. Advertised finish time 10pm, we will see. Hope to see you there.

On Tuesday from 3-4pm there is a chance to see the wonderful Hip-Hop Shakespeare company, Shakespeare, the rapper, as you've never heard him!

On Wednesday there is a chance to hear professional story teller Susanna Oldfield telling Tales for Grown Ups. from 2-3pm there is a workshop to help you create a story and from 4-5pm there is a spellbinding story telling performance of folk tales from around the world.

On Thursday from 3.30-4.30pm we have a fascinating talk from Dr Jay Kennedy of the University of Manchester on the legendary philosopher Plato and the existence of the long disputed 'Plato Code'. Dr Kennedy believes he has thrown a new light on the origins of science, mathematics, music and philosophy.

Nothing on Friday, feet up.

Saturday however is jam packed; we travel through time, from medieval times, to the Georgians, to the 1950s and we have a chance to write our memoirs too!
Starting at 10am, there are workshops and activities till 5pm, so I will list them in starting order as best I can, some activities overlap, so this gives you the best chance to plan your day.

10am till 12pm; The Georgians; Soldiers of the 22nd foot.
Your chance to meet this living history group, and find out about the life and times of the British soldiers in the American revolutionary war.

Also running from 10am till 12pm; Celebrated author and poet James Nash guides us down memory lane in a workshop designed to spark your imagination. Booking essential call 01706 924933 to reserve a place.

Also starting at 10am running till 1pm you can learn to jive dance with a taster session from TC & Joyce it's great fun and very easy just wear smooth soled flattish shoes and have a go!

From 11am till 2pm we have medieval music and games from minstrels Trouvere; historical merriment with a chance for some hands on music making!

From 12-2pm you can sample a taste of post war Britain with a rationed food menu from Hope's catering of Middleton.

From 2-3pm we are back in Georgian times with a talk from Bernard Cornwell expert Jerome de Groot, who will present an engaging talk on Cornwell's Sharpe.

Starting at 3-4.30pm we are back with James Nash who will share his experiences of being and becoming a writer. James will also be joined by Robert Graham who will read from his masterpiece "A Man Walks into a Kitchen", a comedy love story.
Then winners of the Co-operative short story competition will perform their short stories.
At 4.30-5pm, to round off the day, we have a 'Meet the Author' session with Robert Graham who will be signing copies of his book.

A fantastic day to end a great week I'm sure you'll agree.

It was lovely to see so many of the group at our party last night (to celebrate mine and Seamus's wedding last month) I am eating cake for breakfast and thinking about the great friends I have made since joining this group. I can't promise you will also meet your future husband/wife, but I hope to see you soon at one of our sessions!
